Hot-N-Ready Heidi

Heidi Chamberlain died on Friday the 20th. Heidi was my co-worker for 10 months. She was the run-off queen. We shared an office and each others friendship. Heidi was hospitalized back in the 1st week of October when her aorta burst. She beat the odds and survived, but the damage from the lack of blood flowing to her brain ultimately led to 7 weeks in a coma, and massive rehabilitation to have any bit of a normal life. Even after making significant progress like learning how to breathe on her own and walk again, she didn't want to live like that. Everyone who knew Heidi deep down knew she would have rather of died that have been a burden on her family. After telling Greg she didn't see herself getting any better she let her spirit slip away.

We had visited Heidi back in the end of January and it just broke my heart to see her like that. She didn't look like Heidi. You could tell that her tinkle and spunk was missing. It was extremely emotional as she cried the whole 45 minutes we were there. When I went to leave she grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go. I knew more than anything that she didn't want to be there. If she could of held on, I'm sure she would have had me drag her all the way back to North Ogden. Greg showed more dedication and love that most people will ever realize. He was at her side every free moment he had. I had only met Greg twice but, I'm amazed that he recognized me and talked to me like an old friend. Even more so at the viewing I watched numerous people offer there sympathies and he reacted with kindness, but be actually put his am around me and thanked me for everything I did. I feel unworthy of such a compliment where as I really didn't do anything special.

Heidi and me really gained a tight friendship quickly. Moving to Bates from Marlon was such a great opportunity and Blessing in my life. As much as I learned at Marlon I didn't enjoy it there. I could talk with some of the teacher and was actually friendly with some of them, but I was never able to forge a great friendship with anyone. They were a very closed school to new people, new ideas, as well as helping other. I was instantly accepted at Bates and feel an integral part of the dynamics of this school. Heidi was key in making my welcome here special. We were more like brother and sister than co-workers. We were able to give each other a hard time, help each other out, and listen to each other problems all in the same conversation.

What amazes me the most is what I didn't know about The influence i had on her. Staci and me had the chance to talk with her daughter Michelle at the viewing and I'm humbled by a few of her compliments. She said how much Heidi loved me and how many times she told them how good I was, and how good some of the advice I gave her was. Even if it was just getting wallpaper off a wall. I can't believe Michelle thought about the Hot-N-Ready pizza was a big enough part of her life to bring it up in the funeral. It was just me teasing her by tripping at Little Caesar's pizza and hurting her shoulder. I came up with the slogan Denise made the signs and we hung a few up. To think that was funny enough to make her share it with her family then be used in a funeral. I guess you can never take for granted the time you have with someone and the impact you might have on their lives. I'm not a very compassionate or sympathetic person. I joke with most people and I like to have a good time. I never would have imagined that the impact I had on others could be so influential in their lives outside of work. Heidi will be missed by many people. I miss her friendship. She truly was a great person, all 5 feet of her. I hope that her family will be able to move on and know that this is what she would have wanted. Goodbye for now, I'll see you on the other side.

Can't we all just get along.

It has been an interesting last couple of weeks. Between family fights and the everyday grind of life it's amazing that anyone talks with anyone. I can't wait for upcoming events to be over so that life can return to some sort of normalcy. Peyton will be blessed on Easter Sunday, which is going to be fine except now we need to explain to Kennedy why the Easter Bunny probably won't make it to our house until late in the afternoon. Then Brett's wedding is well...stressing everyone out. I know it will all work out and will be everything anyone ever wanted. Getting us to that point just might kill everyone. Everybody is walking on eggshells to please the Bride and Groom which is fine, it's their wedding. It's just called communication. Make a plan and stick with it. If you change your mind, no problem... let us know what the new plan is. Don't get pissed off because we question the plan. We just need to know what the plan is or why it changed. Every question or comment made is not a personal attack. Everybody all at once.....Deep breath in.....hold.....exhale. Repeat 10 times. Now don't we all feel better. Let's just remember our personality profiles and we can all get along better. I'm a D-type personality: direct, domineering, decisive. I can be flexible. Staci C-type personality: calculating, concise, cautious. Great! love you dear. The more info you give her the better she is. If you change your mind - fine. Give her more info. Brett D-type personality, see above. Amber I-type personality. Should be able to get along with anyone. Relax people and communicate with each other. We can all get along. I don't post this to be cruel or to piss anyone off. As a semi-outsider to all the fighting, it's just not worth it. I taught Sunday school two weeks ago and the lesson was about being friendly to each other. Yesterday's lesson was on being a peacemaker (it must mean we need a little peace in our life). To summarize the two lessons, swallow your pride and extend the olive branch. You can be right and still be civil. You don't need to be the weak one to show kindness. Blessed are the peacemakers. You can be entitled to your own opinions, but you are not entitled to make those whose opinion differs from yours to feel miserable. I know I'm not innocent and even get a little thrill on pushing the events, but really let's be adults.

Snow day...Oh wait I work for Weber School District

We spent Presidents Day weekend up at Bear Lake staying in a condo and relaxing through the weekend. Staci's Blog goes into detail about what we did so I won't repeat. It is Weds. 25th of Feb. and I have finally finished digging out of the snow from the storm that hit on Tues. the 17th. I know that when I go on vacation and have to have a substitute custodian it's always a crap shoot. Well snake eyes is what I rolled. Weber School District's Sub's are terrible. It's not totally their fault. They are underpaid, undertrained, and unfamiliar with the in's and out's of the individual schools. It's really alot to learn, I just wish they could take a little more initiative and ownership of there work. Tuesday was one of those storms that only come around once and a while. 24 inches of heavy wet snow fell in about 18 hrs. Clearing that much snow is a chore and you have to be on it to really keep up. My sub was caught with his pants down. In all fairness it's hard to hold a bottle of Mt. Dew, push a snow shovel, and make progress at the same time. The worst part is he only shoveled the same shovel width around the school. OOOHHH! I forgot to mention that I have a four-wheel drive tractor with a 60 inch blade. No shovel is needed. I know that there would be parts of the school that the tractor would have bogged down and not been able to clear, but the main walks could have been done. By the way I also have a four foot snow blower that goes on the tractor as well. It runs off the PTO and can move mountains of snow. It only takes 5 minutes to attach. It could have moved anything that fell. So I shake my head and wonder why they didn't put good equiptment to work. Why would you run circles in the parking lot, and ignore the sidewalks? The district has big trucks for the parking lot. The sidewalks are the custodians priority. Needless to say when I return to work on Wednesday I had an mess of snow, a tractor on empty, and a bunch of questions as to what the heck went on. I managed to get my ego stroked real good when teachers, secretary, and aides all wondered why I could get things done when the two others couldn't. I'm know the sub and Heber were spent. Bonus points for me I can to the job myself.

I had a bowl of stupid this morning...How may I help you?

I just don't know how you can stay in business when you are stupid. We went to buy a table saw at Sears. I'm not a huge Craftsman fan, but for the little use I'll give it, price, and features it usually end up being a good value. Employees must be a value too. We are talking anyone with a pulse. You would think in an economy like this they would have employees that knew what they were doing. After being told there were three in stock they disappeared because no one could find them. So I ordered one so that I could pick it up later in the week. He screwed up the transaction and I ended waiting 25 minutes to have a manager fix the problem. I would of left but my transaction was frozen in space and I didn't want to leave until it cleared. Their operation manager called to apologize later after I complained on there comment board. He did a poor job of reassuring me that any improvement will be made. I really wouldn't shop there again except I need a new battery for my drill. Maybe online is the way to go. The computer screen has as much personality as their employees. I read that Sears might not be around in 2010. I can't imagine why this would be while they hire the people they have working for them.

By their fruits ye shall know them

I have a hard time with when people start trying to mock the LDS church. It's not that they can't believe what they want, but when they spout off nonsense without knowing the truth. There is really not anything you can say that can validate the beliefs of mormonism with someone who doesn't understand the principles behind it. in Utah far to often it becomes the thing to do if your not mormon and we are an easy target because of the lack of truth. How can you expect someone to understand some of the more difficult beliefs if they have never taken the steps to believe the basic. It's easy to say Joseph Smith is a fake if you have never really given his work a chance. It's easy to say the Book of Mormon is false if you've never read it. Ignornace is a poor excuse to mock the values of others. I by no means want to proclaim my perfect life, but I know truth when I see/hear it. Which is why I feel I really need to express my disapproval of another local Religion. If you are Catholic you might to quit reading now.

I've grown up LDS, but have always been surrounded by members of the family who are Catholic and community members who are Catholic as well. Some of the best people in my neighborhood growing up were Catholic. Many times being better than the LDS of my own faith. The actions of the Father Rock of St. Mary's Parish is enough to make me wonder if even he believes in the position that he holds in in church. I've previously written about my uncle Seve and aunt Alma' deaths. For Seve's funeral Alma had to fight to get him to preform the mass. It was only after begging and pleading that he agreed to do it. When Alma died he flat out refused to do any of the ceremony for her. He stated that Seve's funeral was a complete mess and that he wouldn't do it. Alma and Seve were not just Christmas and Easter Catholics, they were very active participating members of St. Mary's. As a matter of fact when St. Mary's split from St. Joeseph's in 1952 Seve and Alma were the First members of the parish. When Seve was ready to die and they wanted to do last rights Father Rock Didn't even know his real name. He didn't know the name of a active 98 year old member of his parish. He wouldn't perform the mass to the lady who not only went religiously to church but was an intrigal part of building both buildings that St. Mary's have been in. Shame on Father Rock for not being the Sheperd he is suppose to be. Whether you believe in the LDS, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, or other faith the flock is watched over by their sheperd. If the Sheperd doesn't care then maybe the flock should scatter to other flocks. Thanks to Father Eric at St. James for seeing my aunt's last services was performed. He went above and beyond his flock to help Alma family in their last minutes with Alma on earth.

The good don't always die young!

Alma passed on on Dec. 28th. We already knew that she would go fast after Seve died and we were right. She just wanted to have one last Christmas to hang around the family. Alma was layed to rest on Jan 3rd. Alma was always a kind loving women who accepted anyone she knew. As much as she'll be missed I'm sure she is happy where she is at.
I can remember from a very young age walking over to Alma house and she always had dum dum suckers or popcicles to eat. The back door was always open and she was willing to spend time to entertain a couple of little kids. I remember going over there and borrowing her World Book Encyclopedias for reports. She was the only on that had them and although they were published in the early 70's, they worked. it's hard anymore to believe you had to research with books and not the internet.
Alma was a fixture at the corner for decades and she'll be missed. I know that her and Seve are happy now and back together. There work will be done soon enough and their eternal connection can continue.

One great weekend

It's been crazy again as we continue to work on all that needs done around the house. We were able to have a great long weekend though. Thursday night, was our trip to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. This is fast becoming my favorite event of the year. The power and emotion that this concert brings out is amazing. The lights, sounds, and story really assault the emotions and creates a spectacular show. Throw in the fact the it always has a great Christmas story with it and it blows me away. The band played almost 3 straight hours. When people ask me what it's like you can't describe it. I tell people - "imagine if Beethoven and Mozart lived today and had all the instrument, light, and pyro that exists today. Those long haired musical genius's would be playing the same stuff TSO plays. Drums, strings, and a few electric guitars screaming out their music." Don't ask, just go to the concert and then you'll know what I mean. Until then words cannot describe it.

Friday we got up and went to the Body Worlds exhibit. They had all kinds of plasticized bodies and parts on display. It was very interesting to see how the body looks underneath the skin. It showed whole body displays of the nervous system, and all the veins in the body in a 3D form. I'm not very interested in the body from a anatomy point of view, but it was cool to see.

Then finally thanks to all the help from Spencer, Rod, and Joe, the house was finished. The board and baton are up and all we need to do now is finish caulking and paint it in the spring. Joe has been caulking. Let him do as much as he wants. He seems to think I have no patience for that kind of work. I do when I need to. He just doesn't believe it. I've seen enough of his early work on the house to know that he wasn't the "measure twice cut once person he is now." That's fine he can caulk all he wants I hate doing that. All in all quite a weekend. As I listen to TSO while I type my mind goes back to one kick butt weekend and one great concert.
